Until Next Time

Today is one of my daughters’ eighth birthdays. Eight? And she’s my baby (youngest) girl! Seriously, where does time go….?!

Time. One of the few common factors that impacts upon us all- the one that we can’t run from, that finds us where we hide, that we each wake up to having another day and night gone each morning. Our very heart beats in unison with each passing moment of time, as a constant reminder that time is ticking also.

I have always had a sense of how short time is, an urgency to get as much done as I can knowing that time is passing me by. And that has been one of my greatest motivators but also one of my biggest tormentors.

There have been times (no pun intended) where the ticking clock and my beating heart have inspired me to make big, bold decisions, to take risks and take the next step along the path chosen towards my big dreams; to not want to waste time, to not let a day pass by without having done something worth while. After all, I just spent a day of my life on that day- I need to make it count!

But there have also been times where the ticking clock has scared me as I catch a glimpse of my aging appearance in the mirror in the middle of the night, where I’ve gotten to the end of a day with a long ‘to do’ list staring at me as not having been checked off, where my beating heart scares me as I face a restless night battling my thoughts and fears, where my children add a year to their age and I’m aware of the  amount of years they’ll still live with me as diminishing.

Time.

I certainly haven’t worked out the secret of balancing between my two extremes of motivation and torment, of faith and fear, of anticipation and urgency. I’m not sure anyone could say they have.

I can say, that I’m now aware, and awareness and acknowledgment are the beginning steps toward freedom.

Perhaps you are battling with anxiety around time passing and the fear of not knowing where you are going or not being able to rest in assurance that it will be okay. Perhaps you are striving in your own strength and wake to find yourself still tired, overwhelmed and frustrated at the pace of life.

Can I encourage you, find a moment, spend some time on you- do something that makes your soul smile, that brings you joy- a long bath, freshly painted nails, a new lip colour, a brisk walk, time pottering in the garden or your favourite store, watch a sunrise or sunset, call a friend, drink your tea while it’s still hot and thumb through a magazine. Find those moments where you can breathe deeply, smile to yourself, and be reminded that you are doing okay and okay is good enough. You have today and today is yours. You have breath in your lungs and hope in your heart. Things change as they always do, and last time they did, you were fine no matter what the change was, welcome or not.

So today, decide to be kinder to yourself- take a moment, even if it’s just one, breathe in life and its possibilities, and exhale doubt and ‘what if’s’. Trust that you have adequate time to complete your tasks and reach your goals. And make a change if you choose to- try something new, re-prioritise, make a more realistic list, set bold goals.

And above all else, know this:

You are more than enough and have all that you need, to do more than you dream and go where your heart will lead.

Until next time

Always for freedom,

Sal
